Female Leader Spotlight: Debra Neufeld

Debra Neufeld has been making a name for herself in the rowing community this past year as the founder of the Lillloet Rowing Club rowing on Seton Lake, just outside of Lillooet, BC.

Debra is also the recent recipient of the CAAWS WISE fund. CAAWS – the Canadian Women for the Advancement of Women and Sport – created the Women in Sport Encouragement (WISE) Fund to invest in the development of female leaders in sport, strengthening the engagement of girls and women in sport.  The two core areas of emphasis are (1) retention of girls in sport and (2) expanding female leadership in sport. CAAWS is proud to support leaders and organizations who are taking steps to bring these goals to life. 10 grants are awarded annually, each valued at $1000.

This award will fund Debra to continue her coach education, helping her continue to develop a competitive junior program at the Lillooet Rowing Club.

I have enjoyed the various groups that I have had a chance to coach up to this point but a highlight has been being selected as Head Coach for 2 separate zones at 2 consecutive BC Summer Games. One day I would like to attend the Olympics on the coaching staff in some capacity. Whether that is as a full coach or as part of a mentorship opportunity. Girls and women can be encouraged if they see other female coaches in all levels of coaching.
In addition to the CAAWS WISE Fund, Debra is also the recipient of the Bobbie Steen Legacy Foundation Award through ProMotion Plus. The Bobbie Steen Legacy Foundation has been created to provide financial support to charitable activities dedicated to advancing gender equity in physical activity and sport and/or the community betterment resulting from female involvement in physical activity and sport. The Bobbie Steen Legacy Foundation Award, in the amount of $1000, is awarded to an emerging leader whose dedication to the women and girls of BC parallels those of Bobbie Steen and the Foundation.

We look forward to watching Debra and the Lillooet Rowing Club’s progress over the next year.

Congratulations Debra!
