There was a record turn out at the 2023 Umpire Seminar, held in Victoria on November 25. Forty-five umpires, ranging from new assistants to seasoned veterans, came out to learn from experts and each other.

Andrea Wooles, Safe Sport Manager for viaSport, presented on the topic of Safe Sport. Andrea’s presentation included an opportunity for the umpires to participate with questions and feedback. The group was very engaged and stated they learned a lot about the need and the policies behind the Safe Sport movement.

The group was treated to a practical and interactive session on umpire recruitment and retention, led by BC Office of the Provincial Health Officer – Communications Director, Andy Watson. The group identified a number of ideas to help grow the ranks of umpires in BC. *Remember, it’s really easy to start on the umpire pathway. More information can be found in the Coaches & Umpires section of our website.
Other presentations included Coastal Rowing Safety, Out-of-Province Regattas, general Regatta Safety, and the topic of Objections, Protests and Appeals.
Elections to the Umpire Committee also took place. All licensed umpires were able to vote on the slate of candidates. Incumbents Tim Henderson, Margaret Shorter, and Gordon Sund were reelected and have been joined by Chanel Ghesquiere. Sheree Moffatt and Ge-an Rijniersce now begin the second year of their 2-year terms.
Rowing BC would like thank all of the umpires who made it to the seminar and to recognize that all of the umpires in the province give BC rowers opportunity for quality racing. Thank you, Umpires!
