Rowing BC’s Support to the Performance Pathway

Rowing BC Junior Development Camps provide performance-oriented athletes, in the Train to Compete stage of Long Term Athlete Development, an opportunity for additional training alongside the other top Junior athletes in British Columbia. These camps elevate performance standards, ensuring that athletes are well-prepared to compete at higher levels while promoting the growth of rowing in the region, through the following:

  1. Skill Development: The camps provide a structured environment for athletes to improve their rowing techniques, strength, and conditioning, allowing them to refine their skills under expert coaching.
  2. Individualized Coaching: Athletes receive personalized feedback and guidance, helping them to identify strengths and areas for improvement, which can accelerate their development.
  3. Competition Preparation: The camps simulate competitive environments, preparing athletes mentally and physically for upcoming regattas and challenges.
  4. Talent Identification: They serve as a platform for identifying and nurturing emerging talent, ensuring that Rowing BC can support the next generation of elite rowers.
  5. Community Building: Performance camps strengthen the rowing community by connecting athletes and coaches, fostering a shared commitment to excellence in the sport.

An application form for interested athletes will be included on the Rowing BC website closer to each camp date. Athletes will be selected to attend based on having met performance standards communicated in advance of the camp. For questions, contact Rowing BC’s Performance Lead, Terry Paul.

Not sure where you fit in?

The best place to start is by making use of the competitive training and racing opportunities provided at your local rowing organization. Make sure to:

  • Participate in erg training/racing as erg scores are a key component of selection to provincial/national performance opportunities
  • Compete in key regattas like the Rowing BC Provincial Championships (or the Canadian University Rowing Championships for university athletes), so that you have directly comparable on-water results for selection purposes
  • Apply to attend Rowing BC Development Camps when applicable

Athletes who meet certain selection criteria may be eligible for opportunities like the BC Summer Games and Canada Summer Games as well as selection to RCA performance teams.

For questions related to performance rowing (and coxing!), contact Rowing BC’s Performance Lead, Terry Paul.
