For U19 selection this year, Rowing Canada Aviron has opened the door for project crews to be created at clubs and provinces. This allows crews to spend time training together in advance of the trials. Rowing BC and BC Clubs have taken advantage of this opportunity.
Over the winter, crews have been established, either through their clubs, or in club-led composite projects. Through regional training dates, and the winter and spring Rowing BC Performance Camps, several crews have been identified as being ready for the trip to selection trials in Ontario.
Crews had the opportunity to test their speed recently at the Shawnigan Lake School Regatta. The different boat classes raced together with a calculated staggered start. Rowing BC Director of Performance, Terry Paul felt the test race went really well.
“Some of the crews had times that were 95-99% of RCA International Standards. That puts them in the hunt for selection to the World Championship team. While other crews, particularly the U17 athletes, will be heading to St. Catharines to gain valuable experience in the high performance trials format.”
